Foreignfox - Fractions

Foreignfox, formed in late 2013 are a Dunfermline based gritty alt rock quartet, they are Jonny Watt (guitar/ vocals), Lewis Hamilton (guitar/ keys), Nick Hernandez (drums) and David McCulloch (bass).

They have rapidly grown their status, from performing live at T in the Park, St Lukes All Dayer, and XpoNorth and multiple UK tours, to doing a live recording session for BBC Radio Scotland for Vic Galloway and even being included on his ‘25 Scottish Artists To Watch’ list. With stellar reviews in The Skinny and The List, it’s clear there’s more great things to come from the Fife built band.

Foreignfox look to build upon their reputation of powerful composition shown in their previous singles such as Exit Frame and Birthday Flowers and their latest single Fractions which was released last Friday, 30 October certainly continues that rich vein of form.

Fractions starts off slow with a melancholic drum beat and places the sombre vocals to the fore, this is a perfect start as it engages the listener as the track takes us on a journey of vulnerability highlighted by the dark opening verse of “and the world’s a stage, and all I do is fake, I’m never fully awake, I destroy the things I make, to make a new one everyday, watch it burn away, like the bridge I’m standing on, I made a mistake” and I’m sure this will be very relatable to many.

As Fractions progresses we have a build up of energy, the drumming becomes more intense and we get much more powerful and punchy guitar riffs. The shift in tone and pace also gives us the listener the feeling that the vulnerability has been overcome and the protagonist is in a much better place as the song builds to its fiery finale and leaves us with the telling line of “it was all a phase”.

Foreignfox have a talent to write powerful songs that showcase their fantastic instrumentation and complement that with an ability to combine that with dark and heartfelt lyrics that are heartfelt.

They are another band that have an exceptional catalogue of back material and I’d recommend you take some time to give it a listen.
