Mawpit - Cittagazze

Formed in Cardiff in late 2019, Mawpit have burst onto the scene with a titanic, yet refreshing take on contemporary alt rock. With a guitarist (Jordan) and drummer (Aled) raised on grunge, punk and alt rock music and a vocalist (Cait) inspired by pop, soul and jazz, the trio’s sound creates an otherworldly amalgamation of grit and finesse.

They don’t shy away from socio-political topics in their writing such as feminism, environmentalism, politics and animal rights.

Mawpit have already released two singles this year, Nature’s Curse in June and Eat a Corpse in September and we now have their third track of the year Cittagazze which came out on Friday 20 November.

Cittagazze is a song inspired by Philip Pullman and His Dark Materials trilogy and the story of Lyra and Will who meet in the city of the song title and fall in love and then get separated in alternate universes.

The track itself opens with a glimmering guitar riff as Cait sings the opening dreamy verse “years ago we crossed paths on a haunted beach. On the run, we were fearless in my memory. I close my eyes I can picture your face and there’s so much I long to say”.

It then explodes into life with the introduction of the drums as the guitar gets cranked up in volume as do the vocals as the song takes on a more grungy shoegaze feel.

Cittagaze creates an engaging atmosphere for the listener as the tracks melodies grab your attention. The strong vocals and clever lyrics also hook you in, especially when they describe the feeling of grief for the separated lovers with the chorus pleading “our love’s a ghost, I hold it close, I feel it start to fade, sit next to me just out of reach, I wish you could have stayed”.

I really enjoyed Cittagazze it’s got a grungy shoegaze feel in its instrumentation which has you nodding your head to the rhythm but it’s clever use of vocals and lyrics gives the song a much more upbeat feel than you may have expected.

It’s another great track from Mawpit who continue to get better and better with each release, I’m looking forward to hearing more from them in the future.
