Crux - Slaving Away
Crux are a four piece alternative rock band based in Newcastle, they were originally a sixth form band and Max Houghton (vocals/guitar/keyboards) and Jake Waldock (guitar) wanted to keep the band going and wanted a bassist.
Jake posted on a Northumbria University band page, to which Hallam Press (bass/vocals) eagerly responded after discovering we were heavily inspired by Muse and was recruited.
Crux have since regularly gigged in and around Newcastle, headlining the o2 Academy2, playing at Scoop Festival, Canny Fringe Festival, and releasing the single Bigg Market to local success. The song then featured in a documentary about the infamous party street in Newcastle and then became Crux's first music video attracting nearly 25K views on YouTube. Crux have recently recruited Joe Reid (drums).
Crux draw influence from the likes of Muse, Radiohead, Dire Straits and Red Hot Chilli Peppers to name a few.
Their latest single Slaving Away was released on Wednesday 7 October and is a damning indictment of today’s capitalist society, taking aim at the jobs that people may have to do to a earn a living, long hours, zero hour contracts all to make someone else richer !!
Slaving Away is a catchy track, sharp drums and a guitar riff drive this track along and the vocal gives it a very punky edge especially with the highly sardonic political rhetoric.
The track evolves on the strength of some huge guitar solos and a heavy bass all against a memorable sing a long chorus of “slaving away, slaving away, for the next generation to do the next rotation”.
Lyrically it is biting, I love the lines “we are the superheroes and we should be adored, with great authority we are the majority but their priority is austerity”.
This was my first experience of hearing Crux and certainly won’t be my last, Slaving Away is a great track, with it’s catchy melody and sing a long chorus and a strong delivery, it’s what you want in a song.
