In Earnest - Put Me Under
Hailing from Southend-on-Sea, In Earnest are a dark indie pop/rock trio, featuring the song writing couple Sarah Holburn and Thomas Eatherton, and the multi instrumentation of Toby Shaer.
With influences ranging from alt-rock to folk and black metal, In Earnest bring their own brand of genre-bending indie.
Their forthcoming debut EP was devised by whittling 30+ song ideas down to just six tracks, in which they explore themes of hope vs hopelessness, desperation, loneliness and identity in their rawest form.
Put Me Under is the first single from that forthcoming EP and was released today 17 April 2020 and tells just one side of the band’s story.
Put Me Under is written from Sarah’s perspective she says:
I suffer from chronic anxiety and depression, to the point where I can’t hold down jobs or be left alone for too long. In my loneliness I am awash with negative thoughts. The song is about feeling overcome by an invisible illness, but knowing it’s a lot easier to cope in the company of a dog.
Now to the song it’s a beautiful piece of tranquility, the soothing vocals of Sarah are just gorgeous, along with the plucky guitars and an ethereal riff it adds a real airy feel to the track. Imagine sitting on a cloud watching the world from above, that’s how it made me feel !!!
The song itself although offering tranquility, the subject content is heavy, discussing mental health and the issues around it, I particularly love the lyrics “everyone says just keep going until you see the light and I’ll just find a carousel and take a ride‘.
Put Me Under is a glorious single, it’s got a fantastic melody which takes you into your own world, but has clever lyrics engaging your brain and absorbing the underlying message of looking after yourself. This is a 10/10 for me, get it on your playlists.
They are also celebrating the launch of their debut single by doing a Facebook/Instagram live stream tonight, 17 April at 8pm.

Put Me Under now has a video to accompany the song where Sarah was filmed every day for ten weeks to document her ever-changing mental health, most of which coincided with the covid-19 lockdown. Combined with the song it’s a very emotional watch:
