bigFATbig - Milk and Vinegar

bigFATbig are an indie punk trio from the North East of England, featuring Robyn on vocals, Katie on guitar and Chaz on bass. The band inspiration from the likes of The Front Bottoms, Kate Nash and The Subways, giving them a very varied sound.

They first hit the scene in late 2019 with their debut single Science which earned them a place on Jaguar's Hot List mixtape for BBC Sounds. They followed this up in 2020 with So Bored and this landed them radio play from the likes of Tom Robinson on Radio 6, just prior to their involvement in Radio 1's Big Weekend with the same track.

These tracks allowed them to build a substantial following in their region and 2020 was due to be a year packed to the brim with live performances for these girls, having been booked for festivals like This Is Tomorrow, Hit the North, and Heelapolooza.

But global pandemic aside they released their third single Milk and Vinegar on Thursday 3 September.

When asked about the name of the single, there isn’t really a straightforward explanation as Robyn divulges:

Katie and I wrote Milk and Vinegar at a time in our lives when we felt like we'd finally found 'our people', after struggling to forge friendships in the past. The two of us have been friends since we were eleven, and (for the most part) have only really ever had each other to rely on, which is something we'd always been okay with. However, in 2018, we somehow fell into a new group of friends who we both felt an instantaneous connection with that was unfamiliar, but so comfortable. Milk and Vinegar is a song about those friends who you consider your non-romantic soulmates, it's fuelled by the intense highs of wanting to spend all your time with those friends, and the frustrating lows of missing them when life gets in the way.

Milk and Vinegar is a great track, with a heavy punk vibe, it opens up with a great guitar riff which gives the song a fantastic upbeat melody instantly punching you in the midriff and making sure you are paying attention.

The punk vibe continues with a great vocal which is delivered with an in your face attitude and the catchy chorus of “I don’t know why I’m, I don’t know why I’m here” is possibly one of the most apt for this unprecedented year !

Milk and Vinegar is a fun track with a catchy punk melody, great vocals and is a continuation of the fabulous output from bigFATbig since they landed with us last year.

They are a must watch for 2021 when hopefully times are more more normal and with bands like this around there is no excuse for festivals when it comes to ensuring they have genre balanced line-ups.
