SALT - Junk EP

SALT are a relatively new band, they have been going for just a little over a year, but feature members from two bands from the late 80’s, the pop band “The Ruby Suit” and post punk band “Vatican Shotgun Scare”.

They are an Edinburgh four piece comprising, Sharon (vocals), James (drums/keyboards), Robin (guitars) and Simon (bass).

Although they have only been going a little more than a year they have been very prolific and have already released an album called “Kicking back the Guilt” and their new EP “Junk” is released today, 28 February.

The first track Junk is the darkest of the songs on the EP, it has some brooding guitar work and some angst lyrics describing in my view a relationship break up, the lyrics “what did you say, she’s breaking up today” perhaps illustrating that opinion.

It is followed by Hallowed, which has a much more mellow, bluesy feel about it, the guitar playing is a bit looser creating a more chilled melody.

Heavens Sake is a rockier track, strong guitar riffs, propelling some dark lyrics “maybe we are cursed” the recurring theme. It drives along until the closing stages when it slows completely to give it a melancholy ending.

The final track High Wire is a much more pop orientated tune, softer vocals and a nice jangly guitar melody, backed up by a rhythmic pop drum beat. It has a very catchy chorus “high wire with me, the losers don’t get anything for free” repeating throughout.

Overall the EP is a good mix of well written songs showcasing the wide range of musical influences that they draw upon when writing their music, with some nods from punk to jazz pop. The instrumentation is tight on all tracks and Sharon’s vocals are sharp and crystal clear throughout.

Track List:

  1. Junk

  2. Hallowed

  3. Heavens Sake
