Reclaim Vienna - Modern Times
Cheshire electronic indie synth pop six piece Reclaim Vienna surprised us all when they released an unscheduled and unexpected lockdown pop single Modern Times on Wednesday 27 May 2020.
Reclaim Vienna are Jonathan Steen (vocals), Danny Smith (guitar), Ryan Harlow (guitar), Ryan Smith (drums), Harry Woodrow (keys/electronics) and Paul Hill (bass).
The track is the fruit of remote writing and demo sessions during lockdown, as preparation for further recordings.
To the surprise of the band, their producer Ben Booker managed to get the song into stunning shape quickly and the band wanted to release it right away and as they are on the small indie label 42s records they were able to get it out quickly hence the sudden release.
When asked about the meaning behind the song lyricist Danny Smith said:
Modern Times was written in frustration & anger at certain elements in the world currently, particularly in England. It’s about people having opinions based on no evidence and worse, having social media to share them on. You can say something now and it doesn't even have to be true. You have the right to your own opinion, but you don't have the right to your own facts. They should remain the same.
The track is absolutely fantastic, the tempo and rhythm set by the synth and drums just grabs you by the collar and gives you a slap in the face, it’s a banging melody and is another dance floor filler.
Modern Times is a perfect piece of indie electric pop, it’s got that great tempo complemented by superb vocals including the backing vocals of guest singer Sarah Hardisty, it’s got everything you need and more.
I love the lyrics of the track particularly the lines “I find my face it doesn’t fit, watching the sand in the hourglass as life goes by“ and “It’s never enough to find the opinions of the simple man though in life we try to always make things right and there’s a sense of lunacy defining the common mind”. It also has a catchy chorus “And People in glass houses they shouldn’t throw stones, I make my way through modern times, I make my through modern times”.
I absolutely love this track and added to their previous releases Reclaim Vienna are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands, I’m really looking forward to getting the chance to see them play live when some sort of normality returns.
These guys are good, really fucking good, get into them now you won’t regret it.
