It’s hard to believe but it’s been almost two years since brownbear last gave us some music with the brilliant Retro and it really looked like Matt Hickman and the band were going to smash 2020 and kick on from their debut album.
It was released just as we were hit by COVID and that pretty much derailed the music industry and the momentum delivered by the track.
Not to be put off by the pandemic Matt threw his energy into the brilliant ‘Sunday Sessions’ on Instagram, hosting brilliant and insightful chats with fellow musicians and others in the music industry and was essential weekly viewing.
And here we are two years down the line and brownbear give us their latest single One More Night which is the first step on the way to the much anticipated sophomore album.
One More Night is the story of a couple not able to accept that the time has come to move on so continue to hold on to something that is no longer there. Hickman says:
When I wrote this song, I was in a relationship where neither party was happy but it seemed easier to co-exist than to split, we were holding on to the length of time we had been together rather than how we felt in the moment, in hindsight that was much more painful.
One More Night sees an extension of a new sound we were introduced to by Retro and sees a shift from indie rock to a more soulful sound.
It’s got a gorgeously smooth melody and a hook that immediately pricks up the ears and penetrates your grey matter. This really allows Matt to showcase a terrific soulful vocal that meanders along like the blood through your veins, keeping you alive with its charm.
If this is what we can expect on the forthcoming second album then there is no need to worry about that difficult second album that some artists experience because it’s going to be an absolute banger on this evidence.
