Brownbear - Retro
Brownbear are a band originating from Ayrshire and very much a project driven by frontman Matt Hickman.
They have come a long way since the release of their debut single Dead or Alive in 2014, gained them national radio exposure and secured high profile support slots with bands like The Libertines.
They gained a burgeoning reputation as a result of their live shows and this was further enhanced by their debut album What is Home released in 2018 on Assai Records.
Their new single Retro is released today Friday 27 March and was preceded by the release of the official video last week.
As a result of the video release it was named song of the week by RAPAL on BBCRnG as well as getting airplay from Jim Gellatly and Roddy Hart.
So the single itself is a piece of sheer beauty, it starts off with a slow drum beat before the attention grabbing guitar hook comes in followed by Matt’s lyric “I have been thinking about the old days” which sets the scene for a song all about memories and nostalgia summed up by the lyrics “I’ve been praying for something special but I’ll keep waiting for something Retro”.
It’s a fantastically constructed song, great instrumentation and backed up by one of the best voices in music just now. If this is a taster of the second album then we have no worries about the dreaded second album syndrome here, cannot wait to hear more new tunes in the upcoming months.
