Billy Mitchell - Know You Better
Billy Mitchell is a Dundee musician, and has been on the scene for many years, previously playing as part of Kyle Falconer’s band, before going it alone with his own band.
Picking up the guitar at a young age following an encounter with his friends dad playing Don’t Look Back in Anger at a party (as fate would have it Billy would go on to share a stage with Liam Gallagher on his 2017 tour as part of the aforementioned Kyle Falconer band),
The songwriter's journey through life and his experiences of both love and trauma fuelled an incredible debut EP Time Takes Its Toll, which was released in October 2019 and is available only on limited 12” vinyl and CD and was released through Assai Recordings.
Having started 2020 with a headline slot at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in January (incidentally it was the first thing I wrote for the blog) followed by a support slot with Tom Walker, 2020 was shaping up to be a busy year before Covid-19 hit us !!!
So this brings us to Know You Better, the highly anticipated follow up to the hugely popular 2018 single Psycho. The track was produced by Bruce Rintoul (Twin Atlantic, Fatherson, We Were Promised Jetpacks).
Billy explains the writing process behind the track:
I had been going through a pretty rough break up and was feeling a bit sorry for myself and drained from fighting off the demons of alcohol and depression. Not long after luckily, I met a girl I had always had my eye on so to speak! My mind was elsewhere now and for the first time in a while my head was clear and I had the urge to express how I was feeling which resulted in this song! Overall it’s about meeting someone new and you just want sit and chat for hours on end.
Know You Better is released today Friday 1 May 2020 and it’s a belter, it’s got a fantastic rhythm to it, a great guitar riff that drives the track, with some nice hooks thrown in to give the melodies a subtle lift, it uses the pace of the track very well, with a slowed down section, before a flourishing finish to end the song.
As Billy admits the song is about meeting someone knew and this is perfectly described in the very singalong chorus “I want to get to know you better, I want to keep you up all night, and we can rely on each other, you say that everything’s alright, I want to get to know you better, I want to keep you up all night, and we can rely on each other, although I’m not your normal type”.
This is a real banger of a tune, it’s a feel good pop rock song and a great follow up to the EP and if he is working on songs to this standard it hopefully won’t be long until we hear news of a debut album.
