Pylon Poets - Rise and Call

Pylon Poets are a band from Torquay, they are Dan Hughes (vocals/guitars), Sam McIver (drums) and Nathan Hughes (bass/vocals).

Their sound is described as a new wave mix of bands such as Muse, The Killers and a hint of solo legends such as David Bowie and Prince.

Pylon Poets have a back catalogue of melodic synth layered songs with audience members and critics alike quoting they are the ‘South West’s best-kept secret’ and one of the most underrated bands in England right now.

Combining themes of the modern world, pop culture, love, political statements and poetry, the band continue to reach to a wider audience with relatable lyrical content, catchy 80’s throwback choruses and striking imagery.

This year has already seen them release two singles Breathe and Abandon and this is now followed by Rise and Call which came out on Friday 6 November.

Rise and Call is a cracking rock track, it’s rhythm set by some blistering guitar riffs and a pulsating dream beat grabs you by the collar and take you along for the ride.

Dan Hughes delivers a brilliant vocal in a song that is a bruising derision of today’s political system, it’s a Rise and Call to fight back and take action. This call is given some colour in the melody of the track when it feels like there is a buzz of sirens echoing in the background of the chorus.

This message is expressed at its hard hitting best when Dan sings the verse “wake up and see through the lies, the din of inaction will dull the cries, the crashing waves of our belief, by the grace of god they won’t part this sea”.

The call to others is best captured in the ear worm of a chorus when Dan sings “we’re calling, we’re calling, we’re calling and here’s our chance to, rise up and take, rise up and take, rise up and take back our freedom”.

Rise and Call is a fantastic track, it’s got a killer melody and an ear worm of a chorus in a song that is delivered with blistering confidence until it falls into silence, all this whilst delivering a political message particularly apt when you see the shambles that the US political system has become in the recent election.
