Pale Fire - Husbands
Pale Fire were formed in 2012 and are a Coatbridge based alternative band, they are Adrian Walker, Barry Boulton, James McCann, Kris O'Rourke and Matthew Nevans.
They are proud to present Husbands, the final single from the forthcoming second album of the same name (incidentally named after the 1970 John Cassavetes film). Previous singles from the album, Various Witches (released October 19) and double a-side Clucky/All the World (released February 20), have received mainstream national airplay from Tom Robinson and Don Letts on BBC Radio 6 Music, Vic Galloway on BBC Radio Scotland and John Kennedy on Radio X.
Husbands was released digitally on all platforms on 7 May 2020 and it’s pretty tasty.
I was just settling down to review it when it surprised me as it launched straight into the lyrics, albeit ushered in by a tumbling piano.
It has a fantastic melody which is very engaging and it’s an immediate head bopping, shoulder rocking, toe tapper so you know righ away it’s a track that will be going straight onto my playlists.
The song is used to describe some of the stresses and anxiety’s that come with responsibility, perhaps of being a husband, there are some great lyrics echoing this thought pattern, I loved the lines “I am here with you now, I’ve always been here, never trying, ever failing, never found time” and later on the brilliant use of adjectives when singing “in a crows nest of worry, in a snake pit of money, promised the rag’n’bone man you’ll owe me a dress again”.
The delivery of these lyrics are added to by delivering them in a local accent, they are proud of where they are from, there is no disguise and no attempt to go with that mid Atlantic drift many rock acts try to deploy.
Husbands for me is a huge song, it’s got a fantastic melody, great lyrics and is pure joy on the ears, simply outstanding. If the rest of the album is this good put me down for a copy now.
